
The Diocesano Museum (Museo Diocesano) of Sarzana grew from the will to house and appreciate the significant artistic heritage present in the area of the lower Magra Valley and it holds numerous works of art. It is housed in the Oratorio della Misericordia (Oratory of Mercy), built towards the end of the 1500's by the Confraternita della Misericordia (Brotherhood of Mercy) or Confraternita dei Neri (Neri Brotherhood) constituted in Sarzana on April 1st, 1578, its purpose was to assist the sick and needy.
The structure consists of a rectangular hall with a barreled vault, provided with an apse with a domed vault. To the sides of the apse and adjacent to it there are three other rooms. The facade in the eighteenth-century style, has a Doric portal with a projecting gable above.
