Sarzana's Diocesano Museum

diocesano museum The Diocesano Museum (Museo Diocesano) of Sarzana grew from the will to house and appreciate the significant artistic heritage present in the area of the lower Magra Valley and it holds numerous works of art. It is housed in the Oratorio della Misericordia (Oratory of Mercy), built towards the end of the 1500's by the Confraternita della Misericordia (Brotherhood of Mercy) or Confraternita dei Neri (Neri Brotherhood) constituted in Sarzana on April 1st, 1578, its purpose was to assist the sick and needy.

The structure consists of a rectangular hall with a barreled vault, provided with an apse with a domed vault. To the sides of the apse and adjacent to it there are three other rooms. The facade in the eighteenth-century style, has a Doric portal with a projecting gable above.

The museum is divided into six rooms:

  • Room 1, the entrance hall holds the silver collection.
  • Room 2, called the "Sala degli armadi" (room of cupboards), as the arrangement of this room is inspired by vestry furniture.
  • Room 3, called the "Sala delle ardesie" (the slate room)
  • Room 4, dedicated to the worship of the Preziosissimo Sangue (Most Precious Blood) as, according to the tradition, in 782 a boat landed in th port of Luni bringing precious relics, among them the Blood of Christ.
  • Room 5, room dedicated to Domenico Fiasella
  • Room 6, called the "Sala Calandrini"
  • Room 7, formed by a nave of the church holding religious paintings and scuptures from the lower Magra Valley.

Sarzanello Fortress

sarzanello fortressThe fortress on the hill of Sarzanello (see the "Castles" section) dominates the entire Magra river valley and for this position played a fundamental strategic role in local battles over the past centuries. It dates back to around 963 (it is mentioned in the Codice Pelavicino document) and was significantly altered over the following centuries, particularly the alterations made under the Florentine Dominion (Signoria Fiorentina) of the XV century, which saw the building of the three donjons and the impressive defensive ditch surrounding the old tower of the fort.

Today the fortress of Sarzanello acts as a venue for exhibitions and every year in summer there are reinactments and banquets in costume, concerts and exhibitions.
