
It was built in Sarzana after 1465, the date that the old town was given the city title and the church of Santa Maria became a cathedral thanks to interest shown by Cardinal Calandrini. Pope Paul II determined that Bishop Parentucelli must leave the already faded Luni and establish a permanent residence in Sarzana; and so the Bishop's Palace building site joined the many other building sites started in that period in which Sarzana's society was eager to appear worthy of the new order.
